Frosty I been fighting my own demons to resist writing about the Pirate Bay trial that is reaching an end and we will just have to sit down and wait for a verdict. A trial what the entertainment industry say is about lost profit. The truth is that the trial is a battle against modern technology and BitTorrent.

The entertainment industry has been relying on a depreciated distribution platform for over a century and they will continue to fight to regain control. Technology has changed so drastically and so has the ways of distribution has come to an almost endless point. When we had media such as LP’s CD’s and VHS we were bound to buy our music and films through only one available channel. The industry tried to regain control on the Internet with DRM while BitTorrent where growing bigger for every day.

I am not a strong supporter of today’s intellectual property and copyright laws and seriously think that it is time to consider a change in how both the laws is written and how the entertainment industry works. The entertainment industry has been sitting like barnacles and scooping in the profit and grown bigger and bigger while the prices for the consumer been climbing and it never decreased in price when it became available on the Internet. I am not willing to pay 10 kronor (€ 0.85) for one song since I can tell right away that the majority of the songs price is profit and nothing else. A reasonable price for a song would probably be somewhere around 1- 2 kronor (€ 0.08-0.16) and a maximum of 50 kronor (€ 4.50) for a film. Also a thing that need to be taken in consideration is that if the consumer is an audiophile he or she would want high quality and that is not possible unless you buy a CD etc.

The entertainment industry has been stuck in a control mode and instead of saturating the market when their sales going down they increased the prices for the loss they made to keep their owners happy while the consumer seeking their way to the “99 kronor for 2” bin to find some cheap films. I honestly believe that the entertainment industry is left behind and will continue to fight a lost battle until their profit is gone since no one will buy anything from them. Technology is here and will continue to evolve and with the Internet we have seen the middle hands disappear from the market.

The entertainment industry needs to restart and have to take the consumer in their calculations ahead of the profit since all humans are opportunists by nature. If it can be obtained by downloading for free the human will continue to find ways of downloading it free. The entertainment industry needs to saturate the market with high quality and DRM free copies for a low price for the evolving modern distribution platform.
